| "Should I install extra window locks upstairs?" | We cannot give you negative advice. Although windows overlooking flat roofs should be protected, you should bear in mind that you may need to make a speedy escape in the event of a fire. |

| "Surely having a burglar alarm just lets the burglars know that you've something worth stealing?" | That certainly was the case up until the start of the 1980s. Alarms used to be very expensive and only those with lots of money could afford them. Nowadays, alarms are relatively inexpensive and everybody has something worth stealing; CDs, television, vcr, cash, jewellery etc. Installing a good quality alarm will present the burglar with yet another obstacle and, coupled with good general security, will force him to look elsewhere for premises to attack! |

| "I don't need any additional window locks, because I have locking handles fitted" | If only that were true! A locking handle only prevents someone from using it to open the window. It is not designed to withstand force! Open the window and take a look at the little lug onto which the handle locks. That is the sum total of your security, and it's usually made of very soft metal. It will just snap off (along with the handle) if attacked. Fit additional locks. |

| "What's the point of taking security measures? If they really want to get in they will. Won't they?" | It's almost impossible to guarantee your security. However, as most burglars are opportunist, they can be easily put off. Your security measures can buy you time. The longer they have to spend trying to break in, the more likely it is that they will give up and go elsewhere. It is always worth beefing up your security See our section "Are You Secure?" |

| How can I protect my shed? | Sheds are targeted all year round. Here are some
things you can do.
1.Paint out windows or put up net curtains. This will stop them seeing what you have to steal. Fit a shed alarm. 2. Fit a good quality padlock and padbar. The padlock should be "close shackled" and made of hardened steel. The padbar should be bolted into a steel plate behind the frame. 3. If the door is thick enough, fit hinge bolts and a 5 lever mortice lock. 4. Site the shed so that you can see it from your house windows and fit a security light nearby. |
