C.C.T.V.
Without doubt, C.C.T.V. has proven to be one of the best crime deterrants around. From city centres to the corner shop, the benefits are huge. As the technology has improved, so the cost of the equipment has come down. It is now possible to pick up domestic units for under £30 from high street shops such as Argos. B&Q have been selling Micromark B&W cameras, with sound and infrared lights for as little as £19. The quality is exceptionally good for the money.
However, if you are planning to install a larger system, you should seek professional advice. Speak to your local police Crime Prevention Officer.
If it is your intention to provide the police with recorded evidence if an offence is detected on camera, then you will need the following:
1) A video recorder that incorporates a time and date stamp on the recorded tape.
2) 36 tapes. One for each day of the month and some spares, clearly labelled. At the end of the year, they will have been used 12 times max. They should then be replaced.
3) A written log recording the whereabouts of the tapes and any incidents caught on camera.
Digital recording is now often considered preferable to analogue tapes. Using an ordinary pc, high quality images can be stored and retrieved. There are no tapes to manage and it is easy to search for a specific date and time. There can be other cost savings too. if you are thinking about installing CCTV, make sure you enquire about this versatile technology.
| DATA PROTECTION: If you use cctv for business use,
and store the recorded images, it will probably fall under the Data Protection
Act. If your camera looks onto the street or other public area, it will
definately have to be registered with the Information Commissioner. Please
ensure that you comply with the requirements.
HUMAN RIGHTS ACT: Generally, this Act only applies to the State and its agencies. ie Local Authorities, the Police etc. As an individual, a corporation or other commercial concern, you cannot usually infringe human rights. Be aware however, that the law constantly changes due to stated cases. You could also leave yourself open to a private lawsuit if you were to use CCTV inappropriately, eg in a changing room or toilet. If you have any doubts, display warning notices so that everyone knows what's going on. |
Whatever your reason for wanting C.C.T.V., there should be a company able to help and advise you.
